What is a VPN and why should I use it?

A VPN, or virtual private network, is a secure network connection that encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through a remote server. This makes it difficult for third parties to track your online activity or steal your personal information.

VPNs are used for security purposes for a number of reasons:

  • To encrypt your internet traffic. When you use a VPN, all of your internet traffic is encrypted before it is sent to the VPN server. This means that even if your ISP or an attacker is able to intercept your traffic, they will not be able to read it.
  • To hide your IP address. When you use a VPN, your IP address is masked by the IP address of the VPN server. This makes it difficult for websites and other online services to track your location.
  • To bypass geo-restrictions. Many websites and online services are only available in certain countries. By using a VPN server in a different country, you can bypass these geo-restrictions and access the content you want.
  • To protect your privacy. When you use a VPN, your online activity is hidden from your ISP and other third parties. This makes it difficult for them to track your browsing habits and collect your personal information.

VPNs are a valuable tool for protecting your privacy and security online. They are especially useful when using public Wi-Fi networks, which are often unsecured.

Here are some specific examples of how VPNs can be used for security purposes:

  • To protect your online banking information. When you do online banking, you are transmitting sensitive financial information over the internet. A VPN can help to protect this information from being intercepted by attackers.
  • To protect your privacy when using public Wi-Fi. Public Wi-Fi networks are often unsecured, which means that anyone on the network can potentially see your traffic. A VPN can help to encrypt your traffic and protect your privacy.
  • To bypass censorship. Some governments censor the internet and block access to certain websites and online services. A VPN can help you to bypass censorship and access the content you want.
  • To protect your business data. Businesses often have confidential data that needs to be protected from unauthorized access. A VPN can help businesses to protect their data from being stolen by attackers.

Overall, VPNs are a powerful tool for protecting your privacy and security online. They are easy to use and can be installed on a variety of devices.

Hi, Rick. I understand the value of using a VPN and I did use one for awhile but it seems like the times I needed it most (for banking and financial services) I couldn’t get in while using the VPN. I let it lapse when my subscription expired but I see that I have access with my phone and my laptop, I wonder what is the best way to use it.
    Thanks!

The banking and financial systems work differently that main uses. The reason that you cannot use a VPN is that those services are attached to the device that you use. a VPN removes that and makes you annonymous on the internet. I am glad you chose to use one. I am working with NordVPN to be my sponsor because they are the only one I trust because they do not log any of your personal information. As soon a a deal is struck with therm, I am going to make some Youtube videos explaining the way a vpn works and the uses for them. In short, a vpn should be use at all times. This keeps you identity safe. If you need more help I urge you to email my private secure email. Thank you for being my reader, Ginny ricksasenior2@security4seniors.com.
